Bes is an Egyptian deity worshipped as a protector of households.
His first appearances have the suggestion of a cat god. Egyptians kept cats in order to attack snakes, and creatures that might ruin crop stores, such as mice, and so Bes was naturally singled out as worthy of worship in Egypt.
Bes was a representation of a lion rearing up on its hind legs. Over time, this image became grossly distorted, and he came to be seen as a hideously ugly dwarf, with long tongue, bow legs, and some feline body parts, and sometimes a lion's head.
Bes is often seen as just the head or the face, often worn as amulets. Some also say that the God bes came from the Great Lakes Region of Africa, coming from the twa(pygmee) people in congo or rawanda. The ancient Twa or pygmee were very short in height like the God Bes, they were about they same height as Bes.
Images of the god were kept in homes to ward off evil, sometimes in a soldier's tunic, so as to appear ready to launch an attack on any approaching evil.
Bes was a household protector, throughout its history becoming responsible for such varied tasks as killing snakes, fighting off evil spirits, watching after children, and aiding (by fighting off evil spirits) women in labour (and thus present with Taweret at births).
Since he drove off evil, Bes also came to symbolize the good things in life - music, dance, and generic, and sexual pleasure. Later, in the Ptolemaic period of Egyptian history, chambers were constructed, painted with images of Bes and his wife Beset, thought by Egyptologists to have been for the purpose of curing fertility problems or general healing rituals.
Many instances of Bes masks and costumes from the New Kingdom and later have been uncovered. These show considerable wear, thought to be too great for occasional use at festivals, and are therefore thought to have been used by professional performers, or given out for rent.
Like many Egyptian gods, the worship of Bes was exported overseas, and he, in particular, proved popular with the Phoenicians and the (ancient) Cypriots.

Depicted as a bearded, savage-looking yet comical Halfling, Bes is ugly and grotesque in appearance; he has a large head, a protruding tongue, bowed legs and a bushy tail. He wears a plumed crown and the skin of a lion or panther. Many say that his appearance guards against evil spirits and misfortune. He carries swords and knives to ward off evil spirits as well as Musical instruments that create sounds that frighten them off. Bes has a special place in his heart for children and can be quite vengeful when he learns of a child being harmed. He is also a god of joviality, dancing, singing and happiness.

The grotesque but cheerful
Bes appears as a stunted, round bodied and bow-legged human, about 4 feet tall,
sporting a bushy beard and tail and wearing the skin of a panther. He is a god
of luck as well as a protector of women in childbirth. He is said to be so ugly
that his visage scares evil spirits away, and many followers of the Pharaonic
gods keep statues of Bes in their homes to keep ill luck away.
Bes is married to Hathor,
who shares his interest in music and luck.
Even more so than Bast,
Bes is a chaotic deity who cares little for dogma. He loves gambling, and gamblers
alternately bless and curse his name, depending on their fortunes. He also delights
in small children. People believe that a babys unexplained smile is an
indication of Bess invisible presence, making faces that only the infant
Almost everyone calls on
Bes at one time or another for luck, and Bes does not care about the morals
or ethics of those who implore him for aid. He acts on whims, handing out good
fortune as it pleases him and delighting like a child in the gifts offered to
Bes has few clerics, despite
his popularity among the common people. His clerics usually earn reputations
as rapscallions and scoundrels, avoiding any position of responsibility or respectability
and playing tricks and pranks on people who are wrapped up in their own self-importance.
They are not considered members of the priestly caste and do not conform to
the standard dress for Pharaonic clerics. They dress and usually act much like
the common people they serve. Most of Bess clerics are male.
Bes has no formal temples and no formal ritual of worship. He is worshiped at household shrines and more informally in gambling halls, taverns, and roadway shrines.
