French Gendarmes in the Italian Wars, early to mid sixteenth century. These men represent the return of the knight, now called Gendarme, to mounted combat. By the middle of the sixteenth century they would abandon the lance in favor of pistols, and during the seventeenth century the heavy cavalryman would progressively shed his heavy armour as well.

A lance deals
double damage when used from the back of a charging mount. It has reach, so
you can strike opponents 10 feet away with it, but you can’t use it against
an adjacent foe.

While mounted,
you can wield a lance with one hand.
