|Ancient Sica weapon used by Illyrians,Thracians other ancient peoples and
Thraex gladiators in ancient Rome,Length varied but this specimen is 35,5 cm
Date 2 September 2009 Megistias
The sica was a sword in
Ancient Rome. It was the weapon of choice used by a Thracian gladiator. It ranged
from 16-22 inches long, but had a sharp almost 90 degree bend in it. This curve
was used to get around the sides of its opponents and stab or slash them in
the back. It was similar to a Scimitar
The sica as mentioned before
could be used to cut into the bear or lightly protected back of another gladiator.
Also the sword could be used, in experienced hands, to killed in one hit. With
the curve pointed down the tip would often catch on the enemy’s helmet. The
Thracian could then lurch the sword upward into the jaw and through the face
killing them instantaneously.
